Fibonacci was an Italian mathematician from Pisa of the XIII century.

The Fibonacci numbers have many interesting properties. The main attribute of the Fibonacci numbers is that the ratio between two following terms approximates with gaining  accuracy the irrational number called the golden ratio.

Both the mathematical and geometrical properties as the appearence in many apparently unlinked natural environments have excited human mind for centuries.

Some people see the golden ratio expressed in the Egyptian pyramids, in the Partenone in the acropolis of Athens and in many sculptures and paintings. Leonardo da Vinci used the golden ratio in three of his masterpieces: the Gioconda, The Last Supper and the Vitruvian Man.

Some others in musical components from authors such as Johann Sebastian Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and Strawinski.

However it is in nature that the Fibonacci numbers reach their maximum expression.

The spacing between leaves on a stem, the arrangement of petals and seeds on some flowers as the sunflower, often have schemes based on the Fibonacci numbers.

The number of petals of the lily (3), of the ranunculus (5), of the chicory (21), of the daisy (many times 34 or 55), as it also happens with the head of the sunflower is the result of two spirals in opposite direction.

We can find the same structure with pine cones, pineapple and shells. The most astonishing example is the shell of the Nautilus. The cutaway of the shell of this big size mollusk reveals a perfect logarithmic spiral.

The golden ratio seems to be the mathematical expression of beauty and elegance of nature, researches sustain that our brain has a particular attitude recognizing as “beautiful” objects subject to the golden ratio.
